Senior Software Engineer

Overview:
Mastercard Send (part of the Mastercard Move portfolio) enables near real-time money movement across billions of card, bank, and digital accounts globally. Program participants (banks, businesses, and digital players) use Send to modernize domestic and cross-border payments, making funds available to recipients almost instantly. Send supports critical use cases such as disbursements, gig-economy payouts, and person-to-person transfers, accelerating a structural shift toward payment immediacy where timely access to funds can be economically and socially transformative.
Send has achieved strong adoption across banks, fintechs, and digital ecosystems and represents a significant growth engine within Mastercard. The program is on track to generate over $900M in revenue in FY2026 and is expected to grow by 50% over the next three years. About the Role
As a Java Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) within the Mastercard Send team, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and operating highly resilient payment platforms that power near real-time money movement across the globe. You will combine strong software engineering expertise with operational excellence practices to ensure the reliability, scalability, security, and performance of mission-critical payment systems.

Role Responsibilities
• Design, develop, deploy, and support cloud-native Java applications and microservices that power Mastercard Send solutions.
• Build scalable, resilient systems using distributed architecture and cloud-native design patterns.
• Develop and maintain secure, high-performing APIs and backend services.
• Drive production reliability through observability, monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Implement and champion SRE practices, including SLIs, SLOs, Error Budgets, and production readiness reviews.
• Automate deployments, testing, monitoring, and operational processes to improve reliability and reduce manual effort.
• Partner with product, platform, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver secure, scalable solutions.
• Optimize application and platform performance to support high-volume, real-time transaction processing workloads.
• Mentor engineers and promote software engineering and operational excellence best practices.

All About You
• Deep hands-on experience building Java-based distributed systems, with strong knowledge of performance, scalability, and resiliency principles.
• Experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and cloud-native technologies.
• Experience translating business requirements into technical designs, architecture decisions, and API specifications.
• Strong understanding of Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and modern software delivery practices.
• Experience applying data structures, software design principles, code reviews, secure coding practices, and automated testing (unit, functional, and integration) to build reliable, maintainable solutions. [Senior SE Skills | Excel]
• Experience with production support, on-call operations, incident management, root cause analysis, and service ownership.
• Experience implementing observability and monitoring solutions using tools such as OpenTelemetry and Dynatrace.
• Experience with encryption, secrets management, API security, and enterprise data protection standards.
• Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, resiliency testing, and support of high-volume transaction systems.
• Hands-on experience supporting containerized workloads on Kubernetes, PCF, AWS, or Azure.
• Experience working in payment processing, financial services, or other high-volume transaction environments is preferred.

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Mastercard benefits for full time (and certain part time) employees generally include: insurance (including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, disability, life insurance); flexible spending account and health savings account; paid leaves (including 16 weeks of new parent leave and up to 20 days of bereavement leave); 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time, 25 days of vacation time and 5 personal days, pro-rated based on date of hire; 10 annual paid U.S. observed holidays; 401k with a best-in-class company match; deferred compensation for eligible roles; fitness reimbursement or on-site fitness facilities; eligibility for tuition reimbursement; and many more. Pay Ranges
O'Fallon, Missouri: $115,000 - $184,000 USD
